What do you mean, you can't sew?

Which of these hobbies do you enjoy?
Woodworking
Home remodeling
Model boat building
Model aircraft building
Model railroading
Bonsai culture
Landscape gardening
Photography
Musical instruments

I have enjoyed every one of them, as well as fish keeping (tropical/salt/pond) and bird breeding. As I began sewing fashion garments for the women in my life, I found myself drawing on skills and practices I had developed in the pursuit of my many previous hobbies:

Accurate measurements (woodworking) of the woman for whom you are sewing.
Blue prints and sketches (remodeling) resemble patterns and fashion illustrations.
Fitting flat balsa over curved frames (boat/aircraft building), like flat fabric over curvaceous bodies.
Creating spacial illusions (model railroading), the way style lines enhance body shapes.
Patient attention to process and details (bonsai), like pre-shrinking and cutting all fabric pieces before stitching.
Harmony of color and texture (landscaping) in your choice of fabric colors and designs.
Composition and balance (photography) are important factors in fashion style choices.
Practice, practice, and more practice (musical instruments) will improve your sewing skills and techniques.
